Embarking on a road trip from Chicago to Houston offers a fantastic opportunity to explore some of the most captivating destinations in the United States. From vibrant cityscapes to serene natural beauty, this journey promises unforgettable experiences. Whether you’re a history buff, nature enthusiast, or adventure seeker, there’s something for everyone on this route.
Journey with no plans and bookings
It was spring break for my daughter, and we were lazing around with no plans. Suddenly, the mood in the house shifted, and everyone wanted to go somewhere, sparking a lively debate about our destination. With bookings hard to come by, my daughter excitedly shouted, “NASA Houston!” That was all it took—we decided to hit the road with no reservations, knowing this spontaneous adventure would be memorable, just like many of our unplanned trips before.
As we set off, my wife started adding more destinations to our itinerary, including visits to friends in Texas. Each family member had their own must-see spot: my wife was eager to see the bluebonnets in bloom, my daughter was thrilled about space exploration, and I was excited to experience cowboy culture. Our journey was shaping up to be an unforgettable mix of nature, science, and history.
Scenic Drive Through Arkansas
The distance is close 1100 miles from Chicago to Houston through Arkansas. We had only about a week in hand, so we did not want to spend too much time on the way. If there is time in hand, St. Louis is gone to be a good stop with a visit to famous Gateway Arch, Cathedral Basilica of St Louis. We skipped it as we had been there before.
A good pit stop is at Heartland Truck Stop in Poplar Buff, MO with good fresh food and Deli.
We decided to stop and sleep by evening near Jacksonville, AR. We found a Super 8 on the way with no deviations. There are plenty of accommodation options in Little Rock further ahead. I loved driving in AR with 80 miles/hr speed highways, well disciplined with only overtaking in left lanes.
Surprise Indian food on the way
By afternoon, wife started craving for Indian food and she was searching for anything on the way. We found this travel center with Indian food near Marshall after Texarkana. Check out the Indian food it was tasty and fast. Search for Taste of India or Pony Express Travel Center (304 I-20 Marshall, TX)
Fun with toll payments and transponders
As we neared Houston and headed to our friends’ place, Google Maps directed us through the Sam Houston Toll Road. We quickly realized that our Illinois toll transponder wasn’t compatible. Finding where to pay was challenging, so for the next two days, we used the “Avoid Toll Roads” option in Google Maps.
Navigating Houston traffic is much easier with an EZ Tag, which allows you to cruise past other cars on the tollways. Later, we discovered the EZTAG Xpress app, which lets you register your vehicle’s license plate and drive through tolls hassle-free without a transponder. Although the toll rate is slightly higher with app, the convenience is well worth the premium for temporary travel. If you plan ahead, you can get an EZ Tag or TxTag to make your journey smoother.
First Stop Water Wall, Houston
Arriving in Houston, we visited the Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park. This urban oasis features a stunning 64-foot-tall water wall that cascades water over its towering structure. It’s a peaceful spot to relax and enjoy a picnic, surrounded by the refreshing sound of falling water. The park’s design and sheer scale make it a unique attraction in the heart of the city. There is plenty of parking if you go around and walk a little bit
NASA Houston and Space Center Houston
Houston is synonymous with space exploration, and a visit to NASA Houston and Space Center Houston was a highlight of our trip. We toured the Johnson Space Center, where real astronauts train, and saw historic rockets up close. The Space Center’s exhibits, including moon rocks and interactive displays, offered an educational and inspiring experience. For me the highlight was touching the rock from moon.
Galveston and Kemah Boardwalk
A short drive from Houston, Galveston welcomed us with its beautiful beaches and historic charm. The Strand Historic District offered quaint shops and delicious seafood restaurants. The Kemah Boardwalk, with its amusement rides and waterfront views, provided a perfect day of fun and relaxation. We rode the Ferris wheel, enjoying panoramic views of the Gulf of Mexico. There is a big roller coaster as well for the adventurist.
San Antonio River Walk and The Alamo
San Antonio’s River Walk is a gem that offers a tranquil escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. We took a boat tour along the river, lined with charming cafes, shops, and historic buildings.
The Alamo, just a short walk from the River Walk, is a site of immense historical significance. Standing before this 18th-century mission, I reflected on the brave defenders who fought for Texas’ independence during the 1836 battle.
Bluebonnet Blossoms in Muleshoe
Springtime brought a special treat as we drove through Muleshoe, Texas. Every in the highways on both sides there were flowers in shades of yellow, orangs and blue. The fields were ablaze with the vibrant colors of Bluebonnet blossoms. These state flowers of Texas create a breathtaking landscape that’s perfect for a leisurely walk and some photography. It’s a scene that captures the natural beauty of Texas at its finest.
Fort Worth Stockyards
Our next stop was the historic Fort Worth Stockyards. Stepping into this district felt like stepping back in time to the Old West. We watched a cattle drive, where real Texas Longhorns were herded down the streets by cowboys. The Stockyards also offer a range of activities, from rodeos to western-themed shops. The highlight of this visit was experiencing the bull rides—an exhilarating spectacle that showcases the skill and bravery of the riders as they attempt to stay atop bucking bulls. Route 66
On our return trip near Springfield, we decided to follow the legendary Route 66 to get a taste of it, as we have always wanted to drive from Chicago to Santa Monica. The journey was truly beautiful, reinforcing our desire to experience the entire route someday. The note worthy places where you should explore is Austin on the way.
