Dudhsagar Falls, translating to “Sea of Milk,” is a breathtaking four-tiered waterfall nestled in the Western Ghats of Goa, India. The gushing waters, amidst lush greenery, present a spectacle that leaves visitors in awe. The falls got its name from the milky appearance of water as it cascades down from a height of 310 meters, creating an illusion of a cascading sea of milk.

A Cinematic Connection: Dudhsagar on the Silver Screen

This natural wonder has graced the silver screen, featuring in Bollywood blockbusters like “Chennai Express.” The scene where the train passes through the magnificent Dudhsagar Falls has captured the imagination of millions of moviegoers, making it even more popular among travelers. From that time, I wanted to take a picture of waterfall with train in background. Somehow it had became one of the dream shot for me.

Journey from Bangalore to Dudhsagar Falls

As usual my travel buddies jumped on to this and we were on the way to Goa from Bangalore by car. Destination, Castle Rock, a small town near Dudhsagar. From Castle Rock, the real adventure begins as we traverse the lush Western Ghats by foot, walking on the railway tracks.

The approximately 11-kilometer trek offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes and takes you through tunnels and bridges, adding to the thrill of the experience.

Though the walk started with all jolly good, it became more and more tough as we walked through the rubbles of railway line. Another one was to watch for trains coming from all directions as it is an active Konkan railway line.

Hiking the Railway Tracks for Unmatched Views

As we walked along the tracks, we were with stunning glimpses of the valley and the first tunnel we approached was an experience by itself and followed by number of them. It was pitch dark inside the tunnel and once there was a train in one of the tunnel and noise of train passing was thumping. It is important to have a torch or headlamps as these tunnels may have reptiles or rodents.

Nature’s Majestic Beauty Unleashed

As we crossed villages and approaching the falls, we could hear thunderous roar and we forgot all our tiredness as we got the first glimpse of fall and droplets from from the fall. The place was bit crowded even though we did a morning hike.

The Magnificent View from Dudhsagar Viewpoint

I was still eager for my dream shot and was willing to wait for another train to pass. But it was still not my dream shot, so I walked further ahead taking only one of my buddy for approximately 2-3 kms where there is a curve from we could see the fall in full glory and the bridge. All I had to do was to wait for a train to pass and to my luck here come’s one.

Finally My Dream Shot
Weather and Best Time to Witness the Beauty:

  3. Carry a torch or headlamp as it will come handy inside the tunnels
  4. Be cautious while walking on the railway tracks and respect local guidelines.
