More articles

Welcome fearless wanderers and thrill-seekers to a land where sky-high cliffs meet breathtaking vistas and heart-pounding adventure awaits at every turn. Angels Landing nestled within the iconic Zion National Park is a trail that will leave you awe-struck with its unparalleled beauty and adrenaline-inducing challenges. So strap on your hiking boots muster your courage and join on a journey to experience the awe-inspiring beauty and embrace your inner daredevil on the exhilarating trail of Angels Landing.

It was a family trip, where my in-laws and family set out to explore Vegas, Utah, and the Canyons. A visit to Zion National Park was a life-changing experience. I read about Angels Landing and wanted to try it. After futile solicitation for everyone to join, my wife joined me, knowing how badly I wanted to try this.

The Trailhead: Where the Adventure Begins

As we set foot on the Angels Landing Trailhead excitement fills the air. The trail starts at the Grotto Picnic Area inviting us to embark on a thrilling journey through narrow canyons and towering cliffs.

The trail immediately starts with a steep ascent testing your endurance and determination. The initial switchbacks provide a taste of what lies ahead with breathtaking views of the Virgin River below.

Not only does Angels Landing offer a thrilling adventure but it also provides a unique opportunity to connect with nature on a deeper level. As you ascend the trail your senses will be overwhelmed by the beauty surrounding you. Towering cliffs lush greenery and the soothing sounds of flowing water will create a tranquil atmosphere allowing you to find solace amid this adrenaline-fueled excursion.

Walter’s Wiggles: A Steep but Spectacular Section

Named after Walter Ruesch the park’s first superintendent Walter’s Wiggles is a series of 21 tight switchbacks carved into the cliffside. As we conquered this section we will marvel at the stunning vistas unfolding before our eyes.

Scout Lookout: A Glimpse of the Reward

Reaching Scout Lookout is a significant milestone. Take a moment to catch your breath and admire the panoramic beauty of Zion Canyon. From here the trail splits into two paths—the West Rim Trail and the final stretch to Angels Landing.

Psst! There are dry toilets here which can be handy for a very needed break 🙂

Chains Section: A Thrilling Test of Nerves

The highlight of the Angels Landing hike is the section where chains are installed to aid ascent.

My wife decided to stop here as the experience of the section of chains had drained her strength. A look at the cliffs and narrow ledges was enough to decide whether you wanted to hold on to dear life or fulfill the adrenaline rush. The only thing she said was I am waiting here for you and that was a reminder for me throughout my ascend and descent till I reached her back.

There are many sections where chains are not present or very narrow lane where you need to wait for others to cross. Angels Landing serves as a reminder of the strength and determination that lies within us. The seemingly insurmountable challenges that await on this trail mirror the obstacles we face in our daily lives. There were many occasions when a huge tug of war ensued debating whether to turn back or proceed. As I was navigating narrow ridges and make my way through precipitous drop-offs I was discovering a newfound belief in my own abilities.

The Summit: A Reward Like No Other

At the summit of Angels Landing I felt a sense of accomplishment that words cannot describe. Took a well-deserved break and basked in the glorious vistas of Zion National Park including the Great White Throne and the Virgin River winding through the canyon below.

The triumph of reaching the summit knowing that you pushed through fear and doubt will instill a sense of empowerment that you will carry with you long after you leave this majestic landscape.

Memories to Last a Lifetime

Angels Landing is not just a physical challenge but also a spiritual and emotional journey. It pushes you to confront your fears to trust in yourself and your abilities and to immerse yourself in the beauty of the natural world. It serves as a reminder that the greatest adventures are often found outside of our comfort zones. So if you’re ready to embark on a transformative experience that will test your limits and leave you in awe of the world around you Angels Landing is the trail for you.

Safety Precautions: Hiking Angels Landing Responsibly

While Angels Landing offers an extraordinary experience it’s crucial to prioritize safety. Always check weather conditions wear appropriate hiking gear carry enough water and stay on designated trails. Be aware of your limitations and make informed decisions. If scared of heights it’s best to stay away. Though I have seen some kids braving these heights I would not take my kid along at least for some years.
